I see no problem with the *look* of a speedy on a strap. My concern is the structure of the metal bars onto which you would have to attach that strap. Yes, the Alma BB is "built" for a strap (as well as are many of the larger Alma's, including the mono I believe, as well as some of the epis, and maybe the damier ebene as well?) But "built for a strap" does not just mean that the stitching onto the bag itself is somehow stronger. It boils down to how some of the metal handle rings are shaped. For example, below is a picture of an epi Alma (not BB) from the top, followed by a picture of an epi Speedy from the top. Note the difference in the shape of those two "diagonally opposite" metal loops. See the triangular parts? That stick up higher than the basic square metal loops? That triangular part is where you're supposed to attach the strap. And because the triangle has a "point" to it, the triangle shape "channels" or "pushes" the strap clip to grip on at the top of the triangle. As a result, as the bag is hanging on the strap, the strap clip applies all of its force at the *top* of those triangular points, which in turn ensures that the metal square loop is being pulled straight upward. The metal square loop is not being "tilted" by the weight of the bag. On the speedy, you would have to attach it to diagonally opposite *square* metal loops. The strap clip would essentially be hanging off of one side of each square metal loop, thereby "torquing" or tilting the metal loop. In other words, as the weight of the bag would pull down on that square metal loop, the strap clip would not be pulling straight up on the metal loop, it would be twisting or torquing it. Which in turn means that the metal loop would be trying to tilt, pulling unevenly on the leather by which it is stitched onto the bag, "twisting" both the leather and the stitching. It's the mechanics of *that* which would conern me, especially if the bag is heavy. Anyway, that's where my concern would be. If the bag is light, it probably wouldn't hurt occasionally. But the more you torque/twist those metal loops (by a heavy bag pulling down on a strap which is attached to the sides of the squares), the more you might unevenly strain or stretch the leather that holds the metal loops onto the bag. Again, hope that makes sense. editing to add: Oops, I just realized you were indeed noting the "pointy bits" ... yes, that's the triangular parts I was referring to. But yes, I do think it would make a difference, because as I said, it's not just a matter of scratching leather or metal. Attaching the strap hooks to the side of the metal squares *would* put an additional torque onto those loops. And my guess is that this is the "strain" that is probably not recommended for the leather on those diagonally-opposite handle attachments. (And yes, I know my description sounds awkward. Look, I'm a physicist by education. My brain wants to use words like force, torque, sine-theta, and radial distance, but I'm trying not to.
